Language Readiness for School:
Kindergarten and Grade 1
Your child’s teacher will probably use the following language:
“Who has more popsicle sticks than Max?” or “What is the first letter in your name?”
“Who went to the zoo with the boy?” or “What happened after recess today?”
“Pick up the ball, run around the cones and hop to the soccer net”
These examples demonstrate how such demands can make the transition to Kindergarten and Grade 1 particularly difficult for children with language delays.
Our intensive format allows for daily practice of Kindergarten and Grade 1 classroom expectations in a smaller, supportive group.
Our daily activities will focus on the development of the child’s grade-appropriate:
¨ Ability to follow and formulate oral instructions
¨ Ability to use language to categorize, describe and define words
¨ Understanding of important vocabulary concepts found in early math
¨ Foundational reading skills: the role of print and pictures in storybooks, letter-sound knowledge, phonological awareness skills and reading comprehension skills
¨ Story organization skills and comprehension of story grammar elements (e.g., Character, setting)
¨ Story re-telling with modeling and visual support of auditory information
Parents will be active participants by supporting their child’s learning at home with guidance by their clinician.
Let us help prepare your child for the language of the classroom
