Lidcombe Program for Early Intervention for Stuttering
|
The Lidcombe Program for Early Intervention for Stuttering
was developed by Professor Mark Onslow and his colleagues at the
University of Sydney, Australian
Stuttering Research Centre (ASRC), as a behavioral intervention
for stuttering in preschool children. In this program, parents
learn to administer appropriate verbal contingencies for fluency
and stuttering to their children in their everyday speaking environment.
Studies have shown that stuttering can be maintained at near zero
following treatment. This treatment has been adjusted for school
age children, special populations and distance treatment.
The Montreal Fluency Centre has offered Lidcombe Program Clinician
Training Workshops since 1999, in collaboration with the Australian
Stuttering Research Centre. In 2002 the Lidcombe Program Training
Consortium was formed in order to establish some quality control
over this continuing professional education. The Montreal Fluency
Centre is a charter member of this consortium along with members
from Australia, United States, and Great Britain. Since the initial
workshop, over 500 Clinicians have been trained in workshops in
Canada and the United States.
The workshop takes place over a two day period. In 2005 a one
day seminar entitled “Evidence-based treatment for school
age children” was added. (see list of Lidcombe Workshops
below). The MFC offers a number of consultation follow up days
during the year that are included in the price of the basic workshop.
This provides an opportunity for clinicians to have an opportunity
to present a case for mentoring and clinical feedback.
Schedule of events and consultation days are posted on the website
regularly. Articles about the Lidcombe Program can be found in
the Newsletter that is archived on this site, the Lidcombe News.

The Lidcombe Programme is a treatment for early stuttering that children
enjoy and which is extremely effective. The treatment is implemented
by parents, during a period of close consultation with the clinician.
Research and clinical trials have shown that the Lidcombe Program can
eliminate stuttering quickly in the short and long term, when stuttering
begins in the first few years of life.
The program of professional education offered by the Montreal Fluency
Centre in collaboration with the Lidcombe Programme Training Corsortium
(LPTC) is conducted for Speech-Language Pathologists. Workshops and
seminars are conducted by the North American members of the Training
Consortium. This includes Rosalee C. Shenker, JoAnne Wilding, Barry
Guitar, Melissa Bruce and Julie Reville. Training includes workshops
and seminars. For further information about events or to discuss your
group‘s individual needs contact the LPTC Training Coordinator
in North America, Rosalee
C. Shenker.

program. These clinics are invited to post the dates of their link/mentoring
