Camperdown Program for Adults and Adolescents who Stutter

May 10 & 11, 2012

Montreal, QC, Canada

First Canadian Workshop!

Presented by Dr Sue O’Brian

Sue O’Brian is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre. She has extensive experience in the field of stuttering treatment and research. The topic of her Postdoctoral Fellowship is the effectiveness of early stuttering intervention in community settings. She also has published extensively in the area of stuttering measurement.

The Camperdown Program is an evidence-based speech restructuring treatment developed for adults who stutter. It differs from traditional programs by teaching the fluency technique without reference to behaviors such as soft contacts and gentle onsets; instead it uses a video model. It involves no programmed instruction, formal transfer tasks or instrumentation for the counting of stutters.

This 2-day workshop is intended for speech-language pathologists with an interest in working with adults and adolescents who stutter. No previous experience will be assumed. The workshop will overview the rationale and evidence for the program. It will explain the individual concepts and techniques involved in the program and how to administer it in both group and individual formats. It will also demonstrate adaptations for adolescent populations and teleheath delivery. The format of the workshop will be some clinician presentation of relevant literature but mainly practical activities, hypothetical cases and problem-based learning.

We have initiated a webinar series for mentoring in the Lidcombe Program and intend to offer workshops on other topics trough webinars, in person or by video conferencing.

On September 16, 2011, the MFC hosted a workshop on Language and Learning, featuring the MindWing group from Massachusetts, whose materials we used in our work last year in Rawdon Elementary School.

In addition, we will initiate a series of one-hour lectures to CPEs and Pre-schools, to provide information about normal speech and language development and “when to request an assessment’. These workshops will be available to both educators and parents.

Narrative Skills in Language Development

Friday, September 16, 2011

9:00 – 17:00 hrs.

This is the workshop that you have asked for…

Description and Learner Outcomes:

This is a highly interactive workshop based on the Story Grammar Marker®, a methodology to help children think, communicate and learn. Based in narrative development research, this methodology and patented multi-sensory materials target the language, thinking and social skills necessary for success in school and in life. This methodology explicitly delineates 7 stages of narrative development in iconic form and includes the literate language features (“story sparkle”) that accompany these stages that serve to advance narrative thought and expression. Educators and parents can use this methodology to teach narrative macrostructure & microstructure and to effectively collaborate to improve their students’/child’s oral language, writing, comprehension, critical thinking, Theory of Mind problem solving and social emotional development. This approach is appropriate for Pre-K through middle school in general education as well as with those children with Language Learning Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Social Learning Challenges, Second Language Learners and children who are Victims of Trauma, Abuse and Neglect in therapy, classroom and/or clinical settings. As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

List and define the components and Stages of Development of a Narrative Episode (story macrostructure)

Generate “Wh” questions for use in Read Alouds & Think Alouds to scaffold storytelling and listening comprehension

Identify and connect the narrative components that refer to Critical Thinking: kick offs, feelings & plans (perspective taking)

Assist student in expanding use of cohesive ties for the formulation of sentences within the episode

Recognize & develop “story sparkle” (microstructure) i.e., elaborated noun phrases, linguistic verbs, conjunctions, etc.

Analyze children’s literature for narrative structure

Create developmentally appropriate, activity-based lessons for targeted lessons

Use the developmental sequence, data collection tools & guiding questions to create goals and objectives for intervention
